In October 2024, Hurricane Milton, a powerful Category 3 storm, made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, causing widespread devastation across several towns. Many of local communities experienced significant storm surge damage, with water levels rising between 5 to 10 feet, flooding, and damage to infrastructure.
